Naturopathic Medicine for Maternal and Pediatric Wellness -Michelle Haff, ND
What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct approach to wellness that integrates modern, science-based knowledge, with traditional diagnostic and treatment methods. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are educated at 4-year accredited medical colleges and must pass two sets of Boards to be eligible for licensure.
How are Naturopathic Doctors different from conventional doctors (MDs and DOs)?
Naturopathic Doctors receive similar training to conventional doctors, but what sets them apart is their philosophy and approach to treatment. Naturopathic Doctors treat the whole person, taking into account all the systems of the body and all aspects of a person – mind, body, and spirit. Naturopathic Doctors aim to find the root cause of illness instead of treating only the symptoms. When the cause of a condition is found, this leads to more effective care and better health outcomes in the long-run. NDs spend more time with patients, with visits lasting 60-90 minutes for the initial exam and 15-60 minutes for follow up visits.
What types of natural treatments are available?
Naturopathic Doctors are trained in many non-invasive, non-toxic therapeutic modalities, including diet and nutrition, supplementation, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, physical medicine, counseling, and mind-body medicine. While NDs always start with natural treatment modalities, in many states they can also prescribe pharmaceuticals, when necessary.
